Where should they be installed?
For new plants they should be placed in the planting hole against the side of the root ball and NO
deeper then the bottom of the root ball. Please see the
Installing New Plants section of this website for more information.
Established shrubs and trees should have them installed just inside the drip line for plants that are
still maturing and for mature plants anywhere between just the inside of the drip line and half way
towards the trunk is OK. Please see the Installing Established Plants
section of this website for more information.
How many will be required?
We recommend one tube per plant for new or small plants, and two tubes for larger mature plants.
Remember that Borby Water Tubes will funnel the water to the root system, but you still need to
supply the right amount of water when it is required. If you connect the tubes up as an underground
watering system (Please see the Watering System section of this website for
details) and water regularly then one tube can suffice for many years. More tubes can always be added
to the other side at a later stage once the plants become more established.
Around established plants the filtration rate will improve once regular watering, down the tube, has
occurred.
Please note:
If you want to water quickly by hand, then the more tubes you put around the plant the quicker you
will deliver the water to the root system and the quicker you will be finished.
If you have water loving plants and place a tube on each side of the plant then you can reduce the
frequency of watering.
The amount of water required will depend on the plants size, the individual plants requirements, the
soil type and the weather conditions. Your local nursery or garden centre can help you with local
information on plants water requirements.
On young plants the tubes may be relocated, if required, as the drip line changes with age.
How deep?
The top layer of 100mm to 200mm of your garden is normally the barrier to cross. Borby Water Tubes
can be inserted from 200mm to 400mm deep and come with precut slots to make a 300mm length.
For new plantings they should be cut to the 300mm length and trimmed off at the bottom so they are NO
deeper then the bottom of the root ball.
Around established plants the depth will depend on the plants size, the current root growing habits
and your soil type. Usually cutting them to the 300mm length is sufficient.
The 400mm length is usually only for large trees, the high side on sloping ground or to accommodate
any landscaping features. It is important to remember that the slope is only on the surface, so once
you have the water below the surface then it will filter out of the tube and down.
Please remember the golden rule that shallow is OK, as the feed water will seep out of the tube and
fall down deeper, but if you install them too deep then you may end up delivering the water below
your plants root system.
Please note:
Borby Water Tubes fit together (end to end) to make a combined length of 750mm should it be required
for any exceptional uses.
