Borby Water tubes can be installed around established plants using normal gardening tools
Dig a hole with your garden hand trowel or a bulb planter to about 200mm deep
Using a suitable longer tool (weeder, screwdriver etc) make the hole deeper. Push the Borby Water
Tube into the hole
Remove the tube with the soil inside. Empty the tube (shown here with wet clay soil); repeat the
procedure until you reach the required depth
Tip:
If the soil is hard then dig as deep as you can and fill the hole that you have dug with water
and allow the water to soften the soil to be removed. Refill the hole with water and repeat until
you reach the required depth.
CUT TO THE 300MM LENGTH AND PLACE IN THE HOLE
IF CONNECTING TO A WATERING SYSTEM PLACE THE HOLE AT OR BELOW THE SURFACE
A small diameter hand Auger can also be used to make a suitable hole, but in heavier soils loosen the
soil around the sides of the hole before placing the tube as the Auger may polish the sides of the
hole and delay water penetration.
Tip:
If the hole ends up larger than the Borby Water Tube, simply backfill around the tube with a planting
mix. In sandy soil water crystals could be added to the planting mix to hold the moisture longer.
Please avoid making a hole without removing any soil, (such as with a crow bar), as this will
compact the soil and reduce the soil absorption capacity..
Alternative ways to install Borby Water Tubes around existing plants:
1. Use the Borby Driver. Please see
Using the "Borby Driver" section of this website for details.
2. Use our installation service, if available in your area. Please
see the Installation Service section of this website for details.
