The Borby Water Tube can be inserted within a depth range of 200mm to 400mm by using the
'Borby Driver'.
The 'Borby Driver', with a 'Borby Water Tube' on the end is driven into the soil using a slide hammer.
The 'Driver' cuts a plug of soil whilst inserting the tube.
See the pictorial page for full details.
Soil Preparation prior to insertion with the Borby driver
Insertion of the Borby Water Tube, using the Borby Driver, requires some side wards compaction of the
surrounding soil.
If the installation is during spring or autumn and the soil has high moisture content then this side
wards compaction occurs normally during the insertion process.
In dryer times when there is little or no moisture content in the soil then the side wards compaction
cannot readily occur. This will make the insertion process considerably harder, and will put stress
on the Borby Water Tube during insertion. To alleviate this problem it is advised to aerate (with a
garden fork - see figure. 2) and water the area where the tube is to be inserted, over a few days
prior to inserting the Borby Water Tube. This aeration also assists in improving the filtration rate
of the area surrounding the Borby Water Tube once it has been inserted (see figure. 3). This will
maximize the advantages of the Borby Water Tube, as quickly as possible.
Should the Borby Water Tube come under too much stress then the section around the pre-cut slots will
collapse (see figure. 1).
Notes:
The Borby Water Tube has been developed with pre-cut slots at 300mm from the lower end of the tube;
they are also useful for the purposes stated below:
1. A guide for assistance during insertion. By sighting the distance
between the soil level and the slots you can gauge the passage of the Borby Water Tube. Should you
find that there is no decrease between the soil and the slots then there must an under ground
obstruction. You should cease insertion and try another location around the drip line of the tree or
shrub.
2. A depth guide to determine the depth the tube has been inserted
to, prior to extracting the driver.
3. Ease of cutting to length once inserted. Important: No
part of the tube should be cut until after it has been inserted.
Please note: If fitting the Borby Water Tube in grassed areas the tube should be inserted so
that when the cap is fitted it will be below lawn mower height so it can be cut over not around.
Please remember the golden rule that shallow is OK, as the feed water will seep out of the tube and
fall down deeper, but if you install them to deep then you may end up delivering the water below your
plants root system.
The Driver cuts a hole that will be 50mm deeper than the final inserted depth of the tube, this
enables you to tap the tube in deeper after the driver has been removed for fine adjustment.
The 'Borby Driver' can be purchased directly from us or can be hired for extended periods. Please
